Three Things Golf Taught Me About Life

by Mikey | Tees & Tips – SSI, Georgia

“Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots — but you have to play the ball where it lies.”

Editor’s Note:
Mikey doesn’t do Instagram sermons. He’s not out here quoting Confucius over swing footage. But if you’ve ever had the chance to play a round with him — or just chat on the range — you know he’s full of quiet wisdom, one-liners, and the kind of patience that makes you feel like you can figure this game out after all. He’ll make you laugh, relax your grip, and maybe remind you that golf isn’t about perfection — it’s about showing up with a good attitude and learning as you go.

We asked Mikey to share a few reflections on what golf has taught him over the years — and what it might teach you too. Here’s what he offered:

1. Control What You Can — Let the Rest Roll
You can’t control the wind, the slope, or that random tree branch that knocks your perfect shot offline. Same goes for life. What you can control is your preparation, your attitude, and your next move. In both golf and life, the ones who bounce back the quickest tend to win in the long run.

2. Stillness Wins
Whether it's a short putt or a stressful moment at work, calm focus beats frantic energy every time. Golf taught me that slowing down — breathing, visualizing, grounding yourself — is a skill, not a luxury. And it pays off on and off the course.

3. You're Never Really Done Learning
Even the pros tweak their swing. You hit plateaus, then break through. You learn from bad rounds more than good ones. Golf is humbling — and that’s a gift. It reminds me that every season of life (and golf) has something to teach me, if I’m paying attention.
